http://donovanbigelow.com/ This is the final video in a set of lectures about Adolescent Development & the first thing I want to talk about is anorexia and bulimia. Eating disorders ie Anorexia and Bulimia are one of several specific psychopathologies that adolescence frequently endure and it is a particularly important one because it is so dangerous. Anorexia awareness is the first step to fighting this disorder. Here are some facts. It is statistically one of the one of the highest has the highest morbidity rate, which means that I have read various figures 12% 15% seems consistent in the literature 15 up to 15% of women diagnosed with anorexia end up dying from complications related to their self starvation. Eating disorders are almost entirely a female disorder. Recovery from an eating disorder can be a long process that requires not only a qualified professional or team of professionals, but the love and support of family and friends. It is not uncommon for someone who suffers with anorexia or bulimia to sometimes feel uncertain about her progress, or for her loved-ones to feel disengaged from the treatment process. So along with major depressive disorder, which sometimes results in suicide, anorexia is a deadly illness that has to be dealt with at the highest level. Eating disorders in adolescence create very reactive behaviors in parents & produce intensely emotional reactions such as “Why won’t she just eat something? If I can just get her to eat something everything will be fine.” Of course this could not be further from the truth. Adolescents especially teenage girls are very concerned about their body image even if they don’t suffer from an eating disorder. Body image is the perception that a person has of their physical self and the thoughts and feelings that result from that perception. This result in intense feelings of disappointment, shame and guilt and, ultimately, increase the risk of developing an eating disorder.
