Susan Michie, Linda Bauld and James Davies discuss the reforms modern medicine needs. Watch the full debate at https://iai.tv/video/life-death-and-m... In opinion polls at election time health is often the leading topic of concern. Not surprising therefore that Governments spend ever more on health. But expenditure doesn't seem to lead to satisfaction or be straight-forwardly related to life expectancy. The US spends 17% of GDP on health, the highest percentage in the world, and almost twice as much as Italy, but comes 46th in terms of life expectancy, more than four years less than Italy. Should we stop focussing on doctors and hospitals, money and medical intervention, and instead focus on lifestyle and well being? Do we want to believe that money and resources deliver health to avoid the less comfortable conclusion that we all die in the end? Or should we just be thankful for the success of our drugs and vaccines and not puzzle too much over the stats? #TheProblemsWithModernMedicine #HealthcareTroubles #LifeDeathAndMoney James Davies is a Reader in social anthropology and mental health, teaching in the Departments of Life Sciences and Psychology. He obtained his doctorate in social and medical anthropology from the University of Oxford and is also a qualified psychotherapist. He has practiced as a psychotherapist in various settings including the NHS. Davies is co-founder of the Council for Evidence-based Psychiatry, which is now secretariat to the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Prescribed Drug Dependence. Susan Michie is a British academic, clinical psychologist, and professor of health psychology, director of The Centre for Behaviour Change and head of The Health Psychology Research Group, all at University College London. She is also an advisor to the British Government via the SAGE advisory group on matters concerning behavioural compliance with government regulations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Linda Bauld OBE is a behavioural scientist who currently serves as the Bruce and John Usher Chair in Public Health in the Usher Institute, College of Medicine at the University of Edinburgh. Her research focuses on two main areas: the evaluation of complex interventions to improve health, and how research can inform public health policy.
