In ArcGIS, setting different scales in a Layout Map (Layout View) is useful when you want to show different areas of a map at varying levels of detail. This is typically done using Map Frames within the Layout View. Below are the main types of scale settings and how to apply them: 1. Set Scale for a Map Frame (Main Map) Open Layout View. Click the Map Frame (main map) to select it. In the Contents pane, right-click the map frame Properties. Go to the Display Options tab. Under Scale, enter a fixed scale (e.g., 1:50,000) or select from the dropdown. Click OK. 2. Add an Inset Map (Different Scale) To show a zoomed-in or zoomed-out view of another area: Go to the Insert tab Map Frame, choose an existing map or a new one. Draw the map frame on the layout (this will act as your inset map). Pan/zoom the inset map to the desired location. Right-click the inset Map Frame Properties set a different scale (e.g., 1:10,000). Inset maps are commonly used to show urban areas, regional overview, or key location detail. 3. Synchronize Scale or Extent (Optional) If needed, you can lock both maps to the same scale: Right-click a Map Frame Properties under Extent, choose: Use custom extent: Set manually Use extent of another map frame: Match another frame Link scale: To keep zoom levels synchronized. 4. Use Scale Bar Adjustments Insert a Scale Bar via Insert Scale Bar. Right-click the scale bar Properties. Ensure it matches the map frame it’s linked to. For each map frame, you can have a separate, automatically updating scale bar. 5. Dynamic Text for Scale Display To show scale as text (like "Scale 1:50,000") Insert Dynamic Text Map Scale. Place it near the corresponding map frame. It will auto-update if the scale changes. #ArcGISLayout #MapScale #ArcGISMapFrame #InsetMap #ScaleBar #Cartography #GISMapping #ArcGISPro #LayoutView #GISDesign
