Geography is more than just maps; it's understanding the very foundation of our Earth! In this lecture, we cover three major pillars of Physical Geography: The Rock Cycle, the Seven Continents, and the Five Great Oceans. By utilizing the expert notes from Parmar Sir, we focus on the "Must-Know" facts for SSC CGL, CHSL, Selection Post, and other competitive exams. We simplify the classification of rocks and highlight the unique geographical features of each continent and ocean. What You’ll Learn: Rocks: How to differentiate between Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic rocks. Continents: Key facts about Asia, Africa, North America, and more. Oceans: Mapping the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic oceans. Credits: A special thanks to Parmar Sir for his high-yield Geography notes, which formed the basis of this comprehensive revision session. #Geography #PhysicalGeography #ParmarSir #GeneralStudies #SSCCGL2026 #WorldGeography #UPSCRevision Topic Explanation & Key Highlights 1. Types of Rocks (Lithology) Rocks are classified based on their mode of formation. Igneous Rocks: Formed from cooled magma/lava. Known as "Primary Rocks." (e.g., Granite, Basalt). Sedimentary Rocks: Formed by the accumulation of deposits (layers). They often contain fossils. (e.g., Sandstone, Limestone, Shale). Metamorphic Rocks: Formed when existing rocks undergo high heat and pressure. (e.g., Marble from Limestone, Diamond from Coal, Slate from Shale). 2. Continents of the World There are 7 continents, each with unique superlatives: Asia: Largest by area and population; contains Mt. Everest. Africa: The "Dark Continent"; only continent through which the Equator, Tropic of Cancer, and Tropic of Capricorn all pass. North America: Home to the world's largest fresh-water lake (Lake Superior). South America: Features the Andes Mountains and the Amazon Rainforest. Antarctica: The "White Continent"; a frozen desert. Europe: Known for its high industrialization and coastline. Australia: The "Island Continent" and the smallest continent. 3. Oceans of the World Oceans cover about 71% of the Earth's surface. Pacific Ocean: The largest and deepest; contains the Mariana Trench (Challenger Deep). Atlantic Ocean: S-shaped; the busiest ocean for trade. Indian Ocean: The only ocean named after a country; its deepest point is the Java/Sunda Trench. Southern Ocean: Circles Antarctica. Arctic Ocean: The smallest and shallowest; located around the North Pole.
