Shinkula Pass, also known as Shinku La or Shingo La, is a high-altitude mountain pass on the border between Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul region and Ladakh’s Zanskar region in India. It sits at approximately 5,050 meters (16,580 feet) elevation and connects via the Nimmu-Padum-Darcha road. Location and Access The pass lies at coordinates 32.7586°N, 77.1517°E, accessible from Manali through routes like Manali – Atal Tunnel – Sissu – Keylong – Darcha, then a challenging 25-km off-road stretch from Darcha. It’s part of a strategic road linking Himachal Pradesh to Zanskar Valley, popular for biking, trekking, and overland travel. Key Features A shallow lake called Sinkula Lake sits 20 meters below the pass summit. It’s considered one of the easier 5,000m+ passes for trekkers, with no glaciers or steep climbs, though a 10-day footpath trek connects Zanskar and Lahaul. Season and Conditions The pass typically opens in May after BRO snow clearance and closes by October due to heavy snow and avalanches; as of 2025 updates, it’s open to tourists under conditions from April/May. Expect rough roads, altitude sickness risks, and sparse facilities—camping is common. Infrastructure Updates The Shinkula Tunnel, under construction since 2024 and due by 2028, will create an all-weather route, shortening Manali-Kargil distance by 522 km.
