Did you know that in 1984 Jimmy Carter ran his first Habitat for Humanity Project in New York. Step right up as we land in the East Village of NYC which use to be better known as Alphabet City. Once considered a neighborhood to stay away from is actually filled with the sense of community and amazing history and stories. In todays video we will share with you all these interesting locations. Mascot Flats was an apartment building the very first Habitat For Humanity project in NYC and it was run by our 39th President, Jimmy Carter. In this area in lower Manhattan Joe worked for many years. Let us show you where he use to work and the lively characters that would stop in to say hi. Back in the 80's this was a community filled with abandoned buildings, punks, squatters and artists. It was even used as the Filming Location of the apartment building in Batteries Not Included since the neighborhood was so run down. Tompkins Square Park can be looked at as a center point in the East Village. Listen as we tell you the tale of riots that once happened in the middle of this park. Plus of course we end our day with a tasty treat at Ray's Candy Store. If you find your self in Alphabet City make sure to stop in and get an Egg Cream!
