A Rainy-Day Adventure at Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan . One of the World’s Largest It was a rainy day today, so I had to switch plans. And honestly, there’s no better rainy‑day activity than visiting Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, one of the largest and most impressive aquariums in the world. The aquarium’s design is brilliant: a spiral journey that takes you from the sunlit surface of the Pacific Rim all the way down to its deepest waters. You start on the 8th floor and slowly descend along a ramp, viewing each habitat from multiple angles and depths. It feels like sinking gently into the ocean. The centrepiece is the enormous Pacific Ocean tank: • 9 metres deep • 34 metres long • Holds 5,400 tons of water • Home to around 1,500 sea creatures from 60 species This is where the aquarium’s superstars live: • Kai, a male whale shark (about 4 metres long) • Yu, a female whale shark (about 5 metres long) Whale sharks are the largest fish species in the world, and seeing them glide past so gracefully was breathtaking. Sharing the tank with them were: • scalloped hammerhead sharks • spotted eagle rays • humphead wrasse • and countless shimmering fish I could have sat in front of this tank for hours . it was mesmerising. Each zone represents a different ecosystem around the Pacific Ring of Fire. Some highlights: • Japan Forest . playful Asian small‑clawed otters and salamanders • Monterey Bay . sea lions and harbour seals • Ecuador Rainforest - giant pirarucu and red piranha • Antarctica - stately king penguins • Tasman Sea - energetic Pacific white‑sided dolphins • Japan Deep - eerie Japanese spider crabs, like creatures from another world • Falkland Islands- rockhopper penguins with their yellow eyebrows and cheeky personalities • Maldives Touch Pool - a gentle hands‑on zone where you can touch rays and small sharks Every zone was beautifully designed, immersive, and educational. Two areas deserve special mention: Jellyfish Galaxy: A dark, dreamlike space filled with glowing jellyfish tanks. Soft lighting, slow movement - it felt like floating in space. Arctic Zone: Home to the adorable ringed seals, who peeked out with the sweetest expressions. They were a crowd favourite. After 5 pm, the aquarium transforms into a “moonlit ocean” with softer lighting and fewer crowds. The tanks take on a magical glow, and the whale sharks look even more majestic in the dim light. Kaiyukan was absolutely worth visiting, especially on a rainy day. The layout, the atmosphere, the variety of marine life, and the sheer scale of the Pacific tank make it one of the most impressive aquariums I’ve ever seen. I could easily have spent the entire day just watching the whale sharks glide by.
