Cable Street Sessions: Atau Tanaka

Atau Tanaka is a composer, performer, researcher, and professor working at the cutting edge of electronic music and gestural control. In this session, he performs his yoga noise piece "Om Ujjayi". A note on the piece from the composer: This piece explores musical performance with different modes of physiological sensing: the muscle electromyogram (EMG), the heart electrocardiogram (ECG), and recordings of the brain electroencephalogram. These ways of following corporeal activity are complemented by acoustic capture of the sounds of breathing. Heart, breath, and muscle become sources of sound and data to excite and be sculpted by a modular synthesizer system comprised of resonators, ring modulators, waveshapers, oscillators and filters. The performance takes yogic practices of breathing (ujjayi) and chanting (om) as ways by which the performer enters states of the body that will be rendered in sound.
