Stephanie Lazarus (born in Simi Valley, California) is a former Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) detective who was convicted of the 1986 murder of Sherri Rasmussen. She attended UCLA (1978–1982), where she dated John Ruetten, and joined the LAPD in 1983 as a patrol officer. She later became a detective in 1994, working in art theft investigations (among other units), married a fellow officer, and started a private investigation firm. Jealous after Ruetten married Rasmussen (a critical care nurse) in late 1985, Lazarus stalked and confronted the victim. On February 24, 1986, she broke into the couple’s Van Nuys condo, fought with 28-year-old Rasmussen, bit her on the arm, and shot her three times (one shot muffled by a blanket). The crime was initially misclassified as a botched burglary. The case stayed cold for 23 years. In 2008–2009, LAPD cold-case detectives reopened it, obtained a covert DNA sample from Lazarus (a discarded cup), and matched it to saliva from the bite mark. She was arrested in June 2009 while still an active LAPD detective. Lazarus was convicted of first-degree murder in March 2012 after a trial focused on the jealousy motive, DNA evidence, and her lost .38-caliber revolver. She received a sentence of 27 years to life. Her appeals were denied (upheld by the California Court of Appeal in 2015), and she was held civilly liable for wrongful death in 2018. During a 2023 parole hearing, she confessed: “I took Sherri Rasmussen’s life from her.” Parole was initially considered but rescinded in 2024 and denied again in 2025; her next eligibility is 2028. She remains incarcerated at the California Institution for Women in Corona.
