August 2025 is ALTEC LANSING DUPLEX Loudspeaker Month! For this episode. the Chicago Horn Loudspeakers guys made a special trip to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to audition an ultra rare matched pair of ALTEC LANSING 604Bs in original Eastman Kodak cabinets. These cabinets are about the size of the Altec 614 utility cabinet. These speakers belong to a friend of the channel Tracy Brown, a well known audio enthusiast in the area. These 1949 classics came with the original schematics and are completely original. I dare say they are almost museum quality. The 604B differs from all other versions of the 604 in that it has a crossover frequency of 1000Hz (vs 1600Hz in all others), paper surround and a larger, some would say "TRUE" multicell horn. Tom and I are blown away by the sound of these nearly 80 years old speakers. Driven by Will Vincent modified Dynaco MK3 monoblocks and a stock Dynaco PAS-2 preamplifier playing various vinyl record cuts. The midrange quality, the imaging and the surprising amount of bass that came from these drivers in 614 size cabinets, makes one wonder if speaker technology has really progress in the last 76 years. If you run across a pair, buy them!
