Unique to the area around Palu in Central Sulawesi, dadendate is a performance art revolving around kecapi, a kind of two-stringed lute played in various forms throughout Sulawesi; mbasi-mbasi, a small bamboo flute played with circular breathing; drums, and vocals. While the lutes and flute threaten to steal the show, the genre is all about the vocals: sung in the local Kaili language, they vocal lines are constructed from improvised rhyming couplets that riff on social issues and offer advice to the audience. A popular trick is to improv some lines about the audience, so this song features a few remarks about us, the two American guys who've come to document their ensemble!
