The United States had 17 million people in 1840. Humans were outnumbered by pigs and sheep. New York State is a serious economic powerhouse, leading in multiple food crops, dairy, and other sectors. Pennsylvania leads in iron and coal. The Census differentiates between anthracite and bituminous coal, and Pennsylvania leads in both. Deep South states like Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana led in cotton. The Upper South like Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and Maryland were dominated by Tobacco agriculture. Massachusetts, the starting point of Moby Dick, led the nation in spermaceti, whale oil, fish oil, and fish. The South had the most gold extraction. South Carolina produced the majority of rice in the nation. Louisiana was the largest sugar producer in the country. Wisconsin territory produced half the lead in the nation.
