Walking along Nevsky Prospekt (Nevsky Avenue), the main street of St. Petersburg, Russia – from Palace Square to the Alexander Nevsky Monastery. Curiously, Nevsky Avenue is named after the Alexander Nevsky Monastery – the oldest and largest monastery in St. Petersburg – from which it began. Meanwhile, the monastery itself is named after the Great Prince Alexander Nevsky. And Alexander Nevsky received his nickname following his victory in the Battle on the Neva River on the 15th of July, 1240. The avenue passes the highest concentration of St. Petersburg's iconic landmarks, including: the Winter Palace, Alexander Column, General Staff Building, Admiralty, St. Isaac's Cathedral, Wawelberg House, Stroganov Palace, Kazan Cathedral, Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, Lutheran Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, Singer House (House of the Book), Catholic Church of St. Catherine, St. Petersburg Philharmonia, Gostiny Dvor, Kupetz Eliseevs Food Hall (Eliseevsky Emporium), Catherine Garden, Alexandrinsky Theatre, Beloselsky-Belozersky Palace, Moskovsky Railway Station, and Alexander Nevsky Monastery and more of architecturally beautiful buildings in the style of classicism, baroque and Art Nuevo. Along the way, it also crosses the embankments of the Moyka River, the Griboedov Canal, and the Fontanka River. St. Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia, founded in 1703 by Emperor Peter The Great (aka Peter I). It was a capital city of Russian Empire in the period from 1712 to 1918. In the Soviet days, St Petersburg was renamed to Leningrad. St Petersburg is located 680 km northwest of Moscow. Here on the "All of Russia'" channel, I explore places not just inside but also travel all over Russia outside Moscow.
