The Romani people, often called Roma, are one of the largest stateless groups in the world. Unlike the Kurds, Uyghurs, or Basques, they have never had a concentrated homeland. Roma communities have been spread across Europe, the Middle East, and beyond for centuries, which made the idea of a national territory far more difficult to realize. Still, there were moments when a “Romani state” was imagined. In the interwar period, some intellectuals spoke of Romanistan, a symbolic homeland. After the Holocaust, in which around half a million Roma were murdered by the Nazis, some leaders even appealed to the United Nations in the 1950s for a homeland similar to Israel for the Jews. In the Soviet Union during the 1930s, officials briefly considered creating a Romani autonomous region, and Roma activists themselves lobbied for it. At one point, plans for a “Gypsy Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic” were even announced, but quickly abandoned. In the end, no Romani state was created because the Roma were too geographically dispersed, faced constant discrimination, lacked strong political support, and often prioritized civil rights and protection within existing states over territorial claims. Today, Roma identity survives as a transnational nation without a homeland. SUPPORT ME ON PATREON ► / historyhustler SUPPORT ME ON PAYPAL ► https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/Histo...
