Denis Donaldson was murdered in April 2006. The former IRA man had just months before confessed to being an informer. In a press conference, the leading Sinn Féin insider he revealed he had been spying for British intelligence for two decades. ““I was a British agent. I was recruited in the 1980s after compromising myself during a vulnerable time in my life,” he said. He retreated to a lonely cottage in west Donegal. He was discovered there by a Sunday newspaper but did not flee. He was gunned down at the cottage three weeks later. No-one has ever been convicted of the murder – his family rejected a claim by the Real IRA that they did it. But whilst much of this story remains a mystery, further details have emerged.
