(18 Mar 2020) It was quiet Wednesday in the Vermont border community of Derby Line where hundreds if not thousands of people and vehicles cross the border daily into the United States from the adjacent Canadian community of Stanstead, Quebec. There were few people on the street the day the U.S. and Canadian governments decided to close the longest undefended land border in the world to all but commercial and essential traffic, but those outside were generally understanding. Jody Alix, who has lived in the area all his life said he'd never seen the border closed, even after the terror attacks of 9/11. "If it slows down the spread of this virus, I'm all for it, as long as it's only for two, maybe three weeks, that would be ideal," Alix said. The United States and Canada agreed Wednesday to temporarily close their shared border to nonessential travel due to the coronavirus pandemic. Canada relies on the U.S. for 75% of its exports and about 18% of American exports go to Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said travelers will no longer be able permitted to cross the border for recreation or tourism, but that essential travel will continue. The U.S. border post at the northern end of Interstate 91 usually processes about 1.1 million border crossers a year. On Wednesday, where I-91 meets Canadian Autoroute 55, there was a line of commercial traffic backed up into Vermont waiting to get into Canada. There was no line for the occasional U.S.-bound commercial vehicles. In Derby Line, along with it's Canadian cousin Stanstead, Quebec, has a world-wide reputation for being a single community located in two countries with the border literally in some cases going through the middle of homes and businesses.
