The next item off our Swiss Bucket List is experiencing Morgenstreich at Basler Fasnacht! Basler Fasnacht is Carnival in Basel, and it is incredible! The oldest document known from Basler Fasnacht is from 1376. Basel also has the largest carnival in Switzerland, and the whole experience is even listed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List. Fasnacht begins at 4:00 AM on the Monday after Ash Wednesday. The street lights go off, and the only light comes from the lanterns from each clique. The cliques march through the streets playing piccolos and drums. I'm so happy that we woke up at 2:30 AM to see this incredible event! We also enjoyed the Cortège on Monday afternoon and Kinderfasnacht on Tuesday afternoon. Còrtege is a large street parade that occurs on both Monday and Wednesday afternoon. Around 10,000 costumed people in formations parade while presenting their sujets (themes). The amount of confetti that is thrown is insane. Kinderfasnacht is when the children practice the Fasnacht traditions. They also dress up in costumes, and distribute sweets and confetti.
