How to Train AKC or UKC Novice Handler Discrimination (K9 Scent Work)

In this episode, Geryah Dingle discusses how to train American Kennel Club (AKC) or United Kennel Club (UKC) Novice Handler Discrimination (K9 Scent Work). Handler Discrimination scent work trials are unique to the AKC and the UKC. What makes it unique is that YOU are the target odor. I try to differentiate the handler discrimination search from when my dog is searching for the essential elements such as Birch, Anise, and Clove. For instance, I will tell Disney to “Search” when we are looking for the oils when training my dog for the AKC Odor Division. I will say to him, “Find Mommy” or “Seek” when looking for handler odor in preparation for the Handler Discrimination Division; you can use something different, but keep it consistent with this type of search. You can even consider switching the outfit or equipment up…for example, instead of running your dog in a harness, maybe use their collar instead to add even more of a differentiating factor to the handler discrimination search.
