We Traveled to Japan to Learn the Philosophy of Aikido from Shihan Ando Tsuneo | Aikido Ryu Dojo Experience In this episode, we journey to Japan to meet the legendary Shihan Ando Tsuneo, head of Aikido Ryu, and experience firsthand the powerful philosophy and deep traditions of Yoshinkan Aikido. Shihan Ando, a direct apprentice of Gozo Shioda, has been teaching Aikido in Urayasu City since 1989 and officially founded Aikido Ryu in 1996. The name "Ryu" (dragon) carries deep symbolic meaning, inspired by a calligraphy gift and the words of Aikido Founder Morihei Ueshiba, who said that the guardian deity of Aikido is Ame-no-Murakumo Kuki Samuhara Ryuo—the dragon deity. During our visit to his dojo, we didn’t just learn techniques—we dove deep into the spiritual and philosophical essence of Aikido. Aikido is not about defeating opponents, but about blending, harmonizing, and redirecting energy. It’s a martial art rooted in peace and connection, making it accessible to all people, regardless of strength or size. Aikido Ryu, now a certified NPO, promotes Aikido through schools and dojos across Japan, from Chiba and Tokyo to Okinawa and Osaka, with a mission to create a peaceful and prosperous 21st century through the principles of Aikido. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to train in Japan with a true master—and to experience a martial art that transcends combat—this is the video for you.
