May is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) & Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD) Awareness Month! 🦓 Joint hypermobility means that a person’s joints have a greater range of motion than the average person. However, when accompanied by other symptoms such as dysautonomia, gastrointestinal dysfunction, and skin fragility, it could be a sign of an underlying condition such as Hypermobility spectrum disorder or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome consists of a group of genetic conditions that can affect the body’s connective tissue, and there are over 10 different types of EDS. Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) is the most common.🧬 🎥 In this video, specialist physiotherapist, Lauren, explains more about the conditions and how personalised physiotherapy can play a vital role in helping people affected to manage their symptoms. Exercises that challenge proprioception, core stability, and balance which are often found lacking in those with HSD or hEDS, can be particularly helpful. Both the symptoms and impact of the conditions vary greatly between individuals; therefore, personalised advice is key. 🔑 It’s also important to note that many of these symptoms can have other causes, so it's best to seek advice from a healthcare professional to ensure an accurate diagnosis and correct treatment path. If you have been diagnosed with hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD), or EDS and are looking for support, get in touch to speak to a specialist today. #ehlersdanlosawareness #hypermobilityspectrumdisorder #hypermobility #edsawareness #edsawarenessmonth #ehlersdanlossyndrome #EDS #Physio #MDT
