7 Easy Steps To Track Ballasting On Model Railroads 💥 300+ Model Building Plans. 🎯 https://www.modelbuildings.org 🎯 Make to HO Scale, OO, or N scale. Ballasted train track adds more scenic realism to a model train layout. However, you need to make sure that the electrics are all sorted out and that all the track rail joiners are tight-fitting before you start ballasting your railway layout. Otherwise, you may find that after you have ballasted your track, some sections of the track won't work properly. For yards, you may want to use a finer grade of ballast to give the impression of more lightly laid lines, while on the mainline you might want more coarse ballast. Step 1: Lay your track in the configuration you want, and fasten the track and underlay to the baseboard using either liquid nails, or track pins. Another important thing to do at this point is to add a covering to the floor if your layout is over expensive floor coverings such as carpet or tiles. You wouldn’t want anyone to get upset with you for ruining the floor! Step 2: Start sprinkling ballast mix in the center of the track. Give a good covering. Don’t worry too much if ballast gets on the outside of the track. In the next step you will be adding ballast there anyway. You can use a variety of materials for ballast, including crushed rock, commercial ballast, or even sand. Whichever material you use, be sure it has NO IRON CONTENT, as if there is iron in the mixture, it may cause shorts in your track. The best way to check this is to run a magnet over the material you want to use. Any material with significant iron content will be attracted to the magnet, and should be discarded. 🔥 Facebook: / modeltrainsrailroads 🔥 Model Train Help Blog: http://blog.model-train-help.com Step 3: Sprinkle ballast on the outside of the rails, and between the different tracks. In this example, there are two tracks. And ballasting was carried out between the two tracks. If you want to add foliage between the tracks or between the rails you can also do that during this step. Check that the ballast or foliage does not foul the rails so your rolling stock will operate on it without problems. Step 4: Distribute the ballast using a brush, making sure the ballast is at track tie height between the rails, and brush any stray ballast outside the track up to the edge of the track ties on the outside of the track. Don’t rush this step! Use the brush to contour a proper profile for the ballast, according to the type of track you are ballasting (eg. Spurs, yard, or mainline), and the region you are modelling. Step 5: Using an ‘eye dropper’, or something similar but bigger, add water to the dry ballast you have applied in the previous steps. Don’t add too much water, just enough to wet the ballast. This will help the glue/water mix to penetrate into the ballast better. 🎯Don’t Forget To Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/user/modeltra... 🎯 Step 6: Using the same ‘eye dropper’ apply a 50% water/50% PVA glue mix to the area to be ballasted. Add enough glue/water mix to cover the ballast on the inside and outside of the rails. Once this is done, allow the glue/water mix to dry, which can take 12 hours or more depending on your climate. Check the area ballasted, and apply more glue/water mix if there is still loose ballast. One good suggestion worth following if you are ballasting during the warmer months is to ballast around mid-afternoon, and wait until the next morning to check it. This normally allows ample time for the glue to set. Step 7: Once the glue mix has set and all the ballast is firmly in place, check that the rails themselves are free of ballast. Remove any stray ballast attached to the rails, and then clean the recently ballasted track, and you have good-looking and functional track on which to display and operate your locos and rolling stock. #Ballast_Model_Train_Tracks #Model_Train_Track #Train_Tracks #Track_Ballasting
