Catholic Bible Study, Genesis, The Book of Genesis. Isaac warns Jacob not to marry a Canaanite and he sends his son away with a blessing. Jacob is fleeing from the wrath of his brother Esau who is seeking his life. However, at Bethel he has a dream and sees angels ascending and descending to heaven from a latter. The Lord promises to give the Land to Jacob and his descendants. Bethel means 'house of God' and Jacob's dream underlines the special manner that the Lord will one day be present with His people in the Land.
