However, the industry is now facing a crisis with less number of carpenters showing interest in the craft. The industry had witnessed its golden age during 1975, when the products were much sought after in international markets especially in Japan and Canada. Apparently, the rise in price of wood without any proportional hike in wages prevents many to enter the industry at present. While there were over 300 carpenters engaged in making wooden elephants during the time, the number has come down to nearly 25 over the years, most of whom are aged people. Lack of government support also adds to their woes. Cherpu, a small village 10 km away from the town Thrissur in Kerala is one of the production places of wooden handicrafts and furniture. Wooden elephants are one of the popular handicrafts made there. In Thrissur, there are many ceremonial processions where elephants play a very significant role. They are symbols of prosperity and joy. Elephants are decorated with ornaments and beautified with paintings on them. People aspired to have elephants in their homes.
