He would rather his art be on a landscape than any building in the world. Landscape was important to Moore and his work is often associated with nature. The human body is another recurring motif in the artist’s work. Henry studied at the Leeds School of Art then was awarded a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London. Henry grew up with 7 siblings in poverty. Henry’s love for art started in grade school when his art teacher constantly supported and encouraged his creativity. Henry decided to become a sculptor when he was 11 years old after hearing of Michelangelo’s achievements at a Sunday School reading. Though he was best known for his sculptures made of bronze, stone, and or wood, during World War II he was unable to get enough material so he switched to sketching instead. Henry was one of the few artists that gathered a high income through their artwork during their lifetime but was very humble and lived in a small farmhouse. Henry created the “Henry Moore Foundation” where he would donate almost all his earnings to support the education and promotion of arts.
