March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and ever since I lost my husband Jay to the disease in 1998, when he was just 42 years old, I have been a staunch advocate for awareness and early detection. The number of colon cancer cases among young people under the age of 50 has risen dramatically. The disease is now the leading cause of death for men under the age of 50, and the second leading cause of death of women under 50. To discuss what may be causing this, as well as symptoms to look out for, I spoke to Dr. Andrea Cercek, a GI medical oncologist at ‪@mskcc‬ who specializes in the treatment of patients with gastrointestinal cancers, particularly colorectal cancer, appendix cancer, and cholangiocarcinoma.
