Read the full write-up here on the Powertune Australia blog: http://powertuneaustralia.wordpress.c... A long-time customer of Powertune Australia, Ryan sports Powertune Australia's Stage 3 upgrade package for SR20DET on E85. Check out the link to the Powertune blog to catch a photo and a full write-up on what's in a Powertune Stage 3 Upgrade for SR20DET on E85. Now for the wordy part on Ethanol Flex Sensors and Wideband Controllers... Ethanol Flex Sensor - The Ethanol Flex sensor Is a device that can be fitted along the fuel lines of a vehicle that will be tuned to run on any mixture of ethanol based and octane based fuel. Traditionally, vehicles were tuned on straight octane or straight ethanol only. Recent years have seen advanced ECUs support multiple fuel mapping which allowed switching of fuel maps to run on different fuel types, however this required dumping of fuel when making the switch, meaning inconvenient switching between fuel types. The Ethanol Flex Sensor overcomes this by allowing a knowledgeable tuner to effectively tune on both fuel types and allow the ECU to handle transitional changes in the fuel and compensate accordingly. This not only offers convenience in being able to run whatever fuel is available, it also offers a more reliable tune for those who wish to run primarily on ethanol. Ethanol content is quite inconsistent between bowsers so a straight ethanol tune from content in one bowser might not be ideal for the ethanol content from another bowser. By having an intelligent degree of compensation in the ECU, a flex sensor will allow the ECU to tune according to whatever ethanol content is being used. As is seen in this video, Ryan currently has an ethanol content of E78 in his fuel lines so the tune on his ECU will compensate accordingly to run optimum on that level of ethanol. Wideband Controller - A wideband controller is simply a unit that allows real-time trimming of fuel during the combustion process. This results in better fuel economy, smoother drive experience, absence of fuelly smells, absence of black soot buildup, better idle and cleaner tune. A number of good ECUs can utilise a wideband controller. As a result of the Haltech ECU and wideband on Ryan's S15, his tune runs spot-on consistently and avoids all the negative "race car" experiences.
