Welcome to the introduction and opening remarks of the international conference “Echoes of Hate: Digital Communication, Populism, and the Regulation of Hate Speech”, held in Ghent on 15 December 2025. This international conference brings together academics, researchers, legal experts, journalists, and civil society actors to address one of the most urgent challenges facing democratic societies today: the spread of hate speech in digitally mediated environments. The event examines how digital communication technologies and populist political narratives can intensify hostility, exclusion, and discrimination, while also raising difficult legal, ethical, and political questions about how hate speech should be regulated. Adopting an interdisciplinary perspective, the conference brings together insights from law, political theory, media and communication studies, psychology, and comparative research. It also pays close attention to the lived consequences of online hate and to the responsibilities of states, digital platforms, and media professionals in responding to it. More broadly, the conference aims to support rights-based responses to hate speech and strengthen cooperation between academia and civil society. The conference is organised within the framework of the Programme for Studies on Human Rights in Context at Ghent University, in collaboration with: Bonavero Institute of Human Rights – University of Oxford, UK Human Rights Implementation Centre – University of Bristol Law School, UK Human Rights Institute – Universitat de València, Spain Solidarity with Others – Brussels, Belgium Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law – Sweden Welcome and opening remarks were given by: Mr Coskun Yorulmaz — Human Rights Lawyer, Solidarity With OTHERS Prof. Dr. Yves Haeck — Programme for Studies on Human Rights in Context, Ghent University Prof. Dr. Clara Burbano-Herrera — Programme for Studies on Human Rights in Context, Ghent University Dr. Eliza Bechtold — Bonavero Institute of Human Rights, University of Oxford 📍 Conference: Echoes of Hate: Digital Communication, Populism, and the Regulation of Hate Speech 📅 Date: 15 December 2025 📍 Location: Wintercircus & De Krook, Ghent, Belgium Video credits: The recordings shared on this channel were kindly provided by Solidarity with Others, and we gratefully acknowledge their generous support in making these videos available.
