The air has cooled, the leaves have begun to turn, and it’s time once again for the annual steam powered Autumn Leaf Excursions hosted by the Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad. At the head of these excursions is ex-Gulf, Mobile & Northern 4-6-2 “Pacific” #425, a Baldwin product built in 1928 and the pride of the Reading & Northern fleet. For the 2018 Autumn Leaf Excursions, #425 and her sold out train will travel the rails of the former Reading Company and Central Railroad of New Jersey between Reading Outer Station on the south end of the mainline, and Jim Thorpe, another railroad town once known as Mauch Chunk until being renamed in 1954. The “King Coal” was once a named passenger train operated by the Reading Company between Philadelphia and Shamokin, and ran on the route between Reading and East Mahanoy Junction, where the line splits and heads in the direction of Shamokin. While the original named train no longer exists, its memory is carried on as the “King Coal Express” as seen on the rear of the classiest passenger car in the fleet, the Black Diamond. During these weekends, #425 sports two whistles: a Reading 6 Chime and a Chicago, Burlington & Quincy 3 Chime, quite different in sound but both melodic in tune. Now please enjoy the experience of the sights and sounds of steam through the autumn leaves, and the beauty and history of Jim Thorpe, in this exciting video brought to you by Blue Comet Productions! This video was filmed on October 13th, 14th, 20th and 21st, 2018.
