(11 Sep 1996) There have been clashes in Chile during rallies Wednesday to mark the 23rd Anniversary of the coup that bought General Pinochet to power. It's not a holiday that everyone in Chile wants to celebrate or even remember. Chile remains deeply divided over the legacy of the dictatorship that brought Pinochet to power for almost 17 years. It's a holiday in Chile, but not a day that has everyone cheering. Wednesday marked the 23rd anniversary of the coup that brought Augusto Pinochet to power after he crushed the democratically elected government of President Salvador Allende. Around two hundred supporters turned out to cheer Pinochet, now 80 years old and the head of Chile's army. But for others the anniversary brought back painful memories. Allende's daughter Isabel and his widow Hortensia Bussi attended a memorial service at the cemetery where the former President is buried. Allende committed suicide on the day of the coup. It was also a day of remembrance for the thousands of people who went missing or were killed during Pinochet's rule. Dozens of people paid their respects at a wall bearing the names of alleged victims of the dictator's regime. Today, (Wednesday) as in past years, the holiday was also marked by protests. Rioters clashed with police outside the cemetery, hurled missiles and Molotov cocktails. Police in riot gear responded by firing tear gas and turning out the water cannons. A number of people were injured. The democratic government of President Eduardo Frei and the military headed by Pinochet have been trying to reconcile their differences and put the legacy of the military regime to rest. Pinochet changed the constitution, allowing him to remain as chief of the army after the democratically elected government took over in 1990. His is due to leave that post in March 1998. His opponents claim he is still the de facto leader of the country. Today's scenes show it's a grievance many people are not prepared to forget.
