One of the seven pieces I've been working on with my high school piano student towards the High School Diploma for Piano Guild. This piece is extremely tricky in the way the damper pedal is handled. Oftentimes, I was using 1/2 or 1/3 pedal. To avoid the lyrical flow to become dry and hollow sounding, at places where there are rests, I still used 1/4 (or less) pedal to sustain a minimal "background" of color to accompany what's to come next. This piece is a short one; though not extremely difficult for early advanced students, the tremendous amount of various nuances and emotions are not easily mastered. MacDowell is an American composer. Many music programs nowadays require students to play pieces by American composers. I always love teaching this particular one! Here's a wiki link about the composer, Edward MacDowell: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwar... A cute note to myself: I recorded this video clip on the morning of Valentine's Day (2/14/2017), as my younger kid was given some TV time. However, he would always call me for help with any random request at random times. As I was approaching the end of this two minute piece, he called "mama mama" and wanted me to know that he learned "M is for monkey". I was actually praying that he would stop calling me as there was only a couple of measures left (Haha!) But he just kept on calling :) I was told to cherish the time that kids need us the most. I will try my best at it:)
