Ever wondered the difference between single reed and double reeds? Here is an insight from oboist, Leo Duarte and clarinettist, Katherine 'Waffy' Spencer. Both played in our period orchestra,The Old Street Band and having played in the production of Cosi fan tutte, they used this overture to aid them! FUN FACT: Leo has a collection of nearly 30 oboes spanning from the 18th to the 21st centuries, and each one needs its own bespoke type of reed. Waffy has a collection of nearly 30 clarinets from 18th to 21st century and bar one, all the reeds come out of a factory fresh sachet! So Waffy has a lot more time in lockdown to play a range of clarinets to her pony for her continuing historical performance course! Our mainstage work is completed by a programme of imaginative education and community projects. ETO seeks to inspire children and adults of all backgrounds, dispelling the myth that opera is reserved for the privileged. Our education work is wide ranging and includes commissioning operas for schools and children with profound learning disabilities, delivering projects for people with dementia and their carers, and creating large scale operas to engage whole communities. Each year, our award winning education programme reaches over 15,000 children and adults nationwide, offering the chance to create, participate in and see bespoke performances.
