#Hyperpigmentation #Melasma #Dermatologist Board-certified dermatologist and LovelySkin Medical Director Dr. Daniel Schlessinger is here with everything you need to know about the three most common types of skin discoloration. What is hyperpigmentation? Hyperpigmentation is a blanket term used to refer to skin discoloration. It can be caused by photodamage, melasma or even an inflammatory disease, and is usually caused by an overproduction of melanin. One type of hyperpigmentation is melasma. What is melasma? Sometimes called “pregnancy mask,” melasma tends to occur in women undergoing hormonal changes. It can appear on the cheeks, forehead or sometimes arms, and can be improved with topical treatments or oral medications under the direction of a board-certified dermatologist. What are freckles? Freckles, sometimes called sun spots, lentigines or pigmented seborrheic keratoses, are catch-all terms that refer to smaller clusters of discoloration caused by the sun or general aging. Seeing a dermatologist is key because they can help you differentiate between them and provide possible treatment options for each. Another common type of discoloration is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. This occurs when some type of inflammation in the skin leaves a red or darkened patch of skin behind, such as a pimple, burn, scrape, rash or cut. It can be exacerbated by sun exposure and tends to last longer in skin of color. Skin pigmentation is unique, and a treatment that may work for one type may not work for another. If you’re experiencing unwanted pigmentation of any sort, seek an expert’s advice.
