Who is Omar Jimenez? Police arrest CNN correspondent Omar Jimenez and crew on live television Omar Jimenez (born November 27, 1993) is an American reporter and correspondent working for CNN. CNN's Omar Jimenez is released from police custody after being arrested while covering protests over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Minnesota State Patrol arrested the team live on CNN air. Jimenez was born in Worcester, Massachusetts and raised in Kennesaw, Georgia. He attended Kennesaw Mountain High School. Jimenez is Afro-Latino, his mother, Jayne Morgan, is African-American and his father, Omar Jimenez, is Colombian. He has two brothers. When he was in sixth grade, his parents divorced, and he lived with his mother. He played basketball in high school, though fractured his back and could not play for eight months. He attended the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, where he majored in broadcast journalism. He played on the men's varsity basketball team from 2011 to 2013 at Northwestern after walking on to the team Omar Jimenez joined the WBAL-TV 11 News team as a general assignment reporter in July 2015. He was born just outside Boston in Worcester, Massachusetts, but grew up in Kennesaw, Georgia, a small town outside of Atlanta. He graduated in 2015 from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Omar got his start on-air for WGEM-TV in Quincy, Illinois, where he covered everything from grass fires to the business behind the local methamphetamine trade. While at Northwestern, he reported on stories like Rahm Emanuel's re-election in the city's first-ever mayoral runoff, ISIS' online influence in Chicago, and tornado devastation in the further south Washington, Illinois. Before he was on-air, he was an intern starting out with the Chicago bureau for NBC News. From there, he went to CNN International, based out of the United Nations in New York, where he helped cover a variety of issues including internal violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo and chemical weapon attacks in Syria. After that, he was back at CNN on the domestic side working with affiliates across the country to help coordinate access to breaking news and nationally relevant stories. His final stop was with the Chicago Innocence Project where he investigated potential wrongful convictions alongside other journalism and law students from across Chicago. While in school, Omar received numerous national and regional recognitions for his reporting including the National Mark of Excellence Award for student TV reporting by the Society of Professional Journalists and a Bronze finish at the National College Emmys in the newscast category.
