A Colombian senator who was expected to run for the country’s presidency is in a “grave” condition and “fighting for his life” after being shot three times at a campaign rally on Saturday. Miguel Uribe Turbay, a member of the right-wing opposition Democratic Centre party and a prominent critic of the left-wing president Gustavo Petro, was targeted while addressing supporters at a public park in Bogota. Paramedics said that Uribe, 39, was shot twice in the head and once in the knee. Uribe’s wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, posted on his X account that he was “fighting for his life” in hospital. Two other people — a man and a woman — were also wounded. A 15-year-old boy was arrested at the scene with a gun, according to the attorney-general’s office, but a motive for the attack is not yet publicly known. “I saw the guy when he took out the gun, he was dressed in black, he had the gun in his jacket, but it was all very fast.
