Alaska: 41 times the size of The Netherlands, and a population of 740,000 people (versus 18 million in the Netherlands). An amazing american state that could be viewed is one huge National Park & Preserve: The state is all nature with very limitted access, if any. This 25 minute video is a small selection of the 1,623 video shots (236 GB of data) that Thea and I shot during this amazing trip. Key points are: Denali National Park and Preserve, Dalton Highway, Denali Highway, McCarthy road, Valdez, Seward, Homer, Hope and Anchorage. Glacier flight in a very small plane over the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve with 3121 glaciers, bear expedition by waterplane to the remote and pristine Katmai National Park and Preserve, boat cruises from Valdez, Seward and Homer and driving 5,421 km in a 4WD (a requirment set by the rental vehicle companies if you want to cover the unpaved roads we had on our route). We travelled to Alaska with the knowledge that the season is short. We made our own plans in advance and gave that to a travel agent to make their proposal a tailor-made trip, exactly how we wanted it. The difficulty with the short season is that many excusions and hotels are already fully booked at the startof the year. So you better be early. We did consider hiring a camper, but there are not many (if any) alternative roads that add value to the trip if you travel by camper. Sure, the overnights are cheaper, but…the rental fees of a camper are astronomical. So we opted for small and cosy accommodations. In the end: A hotel is for us a bed and a shower, and has to fit in with the atmosphere of this trip. Have a little taste of this, what we considered, amazing trip.
