Gilbert (1836-1911) and the composer Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900) worked together on 14 comic operas between 1871 and 1896. The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, founded by Richard D'Oyly Carte (1844-1901) and continued by his son Rupert D'Oyly Carte (1876-1948) and then by Rupert's daughter Bridget D'Oyly Carte (1908-1985), performed Gilbert & Sullivan operas in the period c. 1870-1982. In the period 1988-2003, the Company was revived. From 1917 onwards, complete Gilbert & Sullivan operas were recorded by HMV. In 1920 Gilbert & Sullivan: "The Yeomen of the Guard" was recorded completely on 11 HMV records, black label, in a nice colourful album. Sides 19 and 20 have almost a "bite" out of them, so they sound bad at the beginning, I manually got the worst of the ticks out. It is written on the cover that the records were recorded under the personal direction of Rupert d'Oyly Carte, but it must have been supervision at best: the conductor is George W. Byng, and of the original cast of D'Oyly Carte only one singer can be heard: Derek Oldham. Link to my 78rpm and LP collection at archive.org: https://archive.org/details/@satyr-78rpm
