Train like a PRO in MK1 - 10 Best Practices to play better IMMEDIATELY ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- These are all best practices glean from across esports and made applicable to MK1 based on the direct training and advice from pro MK1 players. As you review these 10 tips, focus on small bite sized goals that you have more control over and watch your own replays. It's very natural to have peaks and valleys in your performance day to day, week-to-week but you will see gains after each practice session if you are SMART goal oriented and using the gold standards of Deliberate Practice used in professional sports, esports, and performance psychology. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here are 10 ways to improve at MK 1 in both the short and long-term. 1. Blocking - you'd be surprised how much simply improving your blocking will do for you. 2. Movement - MK1 has some really fun, simple movement tech known as WAVEDASHING that'll take you far with a few tweaks to your gameplay. 3. Try new characters & Kameos. Experimenting with different cameos in Mortal Kombat 1 is important to find the best one for your character, although copying a top player's choice is always recommended as a strong starting point. 4. Get really comfortable with 4 or 5 bread and butter combos for your character. Don't focus on memorizing every single combo string or the fancy long ones when you're starting out. Not even the top players are using every single string. 5. Watch In-game Replays - Watching in-game replays is one the BEST ways of getting data from some of the top players of your character on the leaderboards. Simply look for the leaderboards and click view replays if they have the option enabled and you'll be able to see up to their last 10 online matches. You'll also want to review your own replays after finishing a session. In esports we call these VOD reviews and it can be a little awkward at first. The goal is to look at strengths and growth opportunities in your gameplay and take note on what you need to improve on next time. Up next we have: 6. Resource Management (EX Meter & Kameos) - in MK1 you'll find yourself with 3 bars of EX meter to empower many of your character's most important special moves. If you're not using your EX meter and leaving it full for too long, you're losing out on free additional damage and putting yourself at a major disadvantage. Likewise with Kameos - same deal. Your Kameo meter will continue to refill after use so sitting on full meter is wasted resources 7. Hit confirming is a skill you improve over time enabling you to determine whether your attacks are landing and react accordingly, whether it's continuing the combo or adjusting your strategy to punish a block, etc. 8. Ducking vs blocking fireballs - Simply put you can react to zoning faster if you're ducking instead of blocking ranged attacks. Blocking incurs a slight hit stun delay that puts you on your back foot whereas dodging you can continue to advance and even begin a counter attack much quicker than if you were simply blocking. 9. Delayed wake-up is another simple adjustment that'll give you a nice mix up to throw off opponents. Simple hold R1/RB to delay getup and you'll give yourself a better chance avoiding the low or overhead mixup - especially from aggressive opponents on the advance 10. Understand your purpose for playing the game: are you here for fun or competitive? If for fun then remembering it's just a game is going to come into play and finding where to maximize your joy when the game becomes too much of a grind. This means knowing when to take a break and maybe play another game or dare I say… touch grass?
