A Guide to Who's Who on the Fotherdale Livestreams🦉🐾🦅 | Discover Wildlife | Robert E Fuller

There are many different characters here at Fotherdale, it can be hard to tell who’s who. There are four main bird pairs here: BARN OWLS OF ELM STUMP Gylfie and Finn currently live in my Elm Stump nest box In 2021 they had three chicks, Nutmeg, Clove and Thyme. GYLFIIE Gyflie is the female and she has been at Fotherdale since 2018. She doesn’t have an ID ring and has speckles on her front. FINN Finn, the male, has an ID ring on his right leg and no speckles on his chest. He was rescued from Scarborough in 2019 and released here BARN OWLS OF SYCAMORE The other resident pair of Barn owls are Willow and Ghost. Neither have ID rings. WILLOW Willow, the female, is heavily speckled on her front and has a very dark ginger fringe on her facial disk. GHOST Ghost, the male, doesn’t have many speckles and has a very pale facial disk. He also has a bowed left leg! Last year this pair had a late clutch of four chicks . Now has laid another three eggs and it's only January. This is the earliest I’ve ever known barn owls to lay. KESTRELS (FORMERLY OF SYCAMORE) The kestrel pair at Fotherdale are Mr and Mrs Kes. They nested at Sycamore last year and raised six chicks in this nest box. It will be interesting to see where they nest this year now that barn owls Willow & Ghost are already occupying Sycamore. Neither Mr or Mrs Kes have ID rings. But Kestrels are easily distinguishable. Mr Kes, the male, has a grey/blue head and tail., whereas Mrs Kes’ head and tail is brown. They’re prospecting nests for next year and they’re currently favouring Ash Stump. TAWNY OWLS OF BEECH Tawny owls Bomber and Luna are regulars on my live stream. Bomber has been around since 2013, making him the oldest character here. This pair are hard to tell apart. Both are a similar size and neither have an ID ring. BOMBER Bomber has a heavily featured face. With Ginger markings above and below his eyes. Bomber has a darker patch of feathers on his breast before a very pale patch above his feet. LUNA Luna has a much paler face. Her breast is more mottled with dark markings across her white feathers. She also has a scar across her right foot, which is a handy identifier at night. I recently found out that Luna is actually a rescued owl and one I fostered at Beech in 2017. STOATS (INCLUDING HAZEL) Hazel lives in a gabion wall at the bottom of the garden. She’s raised her kits here last year and is easy to identify from the kink in her left ear. There are other stoats living here too. BUZZARDS I also get daily visits from a buzzard pair that live in the valley. Last year I got cameras into their nest.
