The alleged vote-buying incident during the Ayawaso East parliamentary primaries has sparked intense political debate over whether the results should be annulled or allowed to stand. The controversy has once again brought Ghana’s campaign financing culture and internal party democracy under the spotlight. MP for Sisala East and TOR Board Member, Mohammed Bataglia, argues that Ghana’s political system has gradually shifted from a merit-based process to a monetised one, driven by individual voter demands and the growing perception of Parliament as a gateway to appointments and personal advancement. According to Awal Mohammed of the NPP Communications Directorate, vote buying is not unique to Ayawaso East and occurs widely across the political landscape. However, he maintains that the circumstances surrounding the primaries suggest a lack of internal support for Baba Jamal, insisting that individuals found culpable must be punished to serve as a deterrent. Director of Field Operations for the United Party, Hopeson Adorye, describes vote buying as a common practice within Ghanaian politics and cautions against selective justice. While commending the party leadership and the Presidency for their swift response, he warns that annulling the primaries could hand the seat to the NPP in the general election. He also criticises the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s involvement, questioning its effectiveness, and calls for the dismantling of the delegates system, which he says fuels monetisation of elections. Political marketing lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba, Dr Bernard Tutu Boahene, takes a firm stance against electoral malpractice, stressing the damaging consequences of vote buying on democratic governance.
