SOUNDBITE: (English) Dr. Naseer Abdel Al, Head of the Neonatal Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Abu el-Reesh Hospital: "This case is of a conjoined twins or a Siamese twins, and they are unique in the fact that they have a vertical alignment. They are joined in the head with a vertical alignment, and this is the second case in world literature, and it presents,of course, lots of challenges since they were born in upper Egypt, June 2001. Since they came to us we had in parallel several challenges to solve or to face; one to keep them alive, the second is to allow for their normal development and at the same time prevent them from having the ordinary types of diseases that could be detrimental to their health." 5. Various, twins being fed 6. SOUNDBITE: (English) Dr. Naseer Abdel Al, Head of the Neonatal Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Abu el-Reesh Hospital: "Since they were born we were preparing actually for an eventual separation surgery. But it took us a lot (to go through) of contacts and investigations, and we were fortunate enough that Dr. Salyer in Dallas has graciously extended his invitation for the team and the babies to come to the states to be treated over there, and we'd like on behalf of all Egyptians to thank Salyer and his team, and the Americans in general, that they have forwarded this invitation for us." 7. Mid shot, twins 8. Exterior, hospital STORYLINE: A pair of Siamese twins joined at the head will be leaving Egypt for Texas this month to undergo a separation operation. Seven-month-old Ahmed and Mohamed Ibrahim, both healthy and alert, share a small part of their brain, according to the doctor currently responsible for them. Dr. Naseer Abdel Al, head of the neonatal surgical intensive care unit at Cairo's Abu el-Reesh Hospital, put out an international call for help in treating the twins last month, and an American team headed by Dr. Kenneth Salyer responded. The operation is to be funded by the US-based International Craniofacial Institute, which Salyer founded and heads. Craniofacial surgery is the specialty of operating on the skull and face. Salyer has performed over 13-thousand craniofacial, plastic, and reconstructive operations on children and adults in the last 30 years. An Egyptian team of two nurses and three doctors will be accompanying the twins to Dallas. They are expected to be in the United States for six months, including the preparation phase, surgery time and rehabilitation. The twins were born by Caesarean section to a labourer and his wife in the southern Egyptian town of Qus, near Luxor. Last year, a team of doctors in Singapore separated two Siamese twin girls from Nepal who were joined at the head in a 100-hour operation that was considered a landmark.
