They know that the people are voting out a dictator but as you can see, all the military and the police are under capture. What they are doing is illegal. They are being given illegal orders to torture people, to beat up people, but the people are not giving up.” 11. Mid of supporter 12. Wine on stage STORYLINE: Thousands of supporters of the Ugandan opposition leader known as Bobi Wine turned out on Friday to show their support at a rally ahead of next week's presidential election. Wine, a musician-turned-politician whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, wore a flak jacket and helmet as he waved at supporters from the top of a vehicle on his way to the rally in Mukono. His supporters rallied alongside him, some riding vehicles, others running on foot, as he made his way through the streets. The rally came as the United Nations Human Rights Office warned that a presidential election in Uganda would be “marked by widespread repression and intimidation” against the opposition and others. Ugandan authorities in the East African country have used lawfare, including military legislation, to restrict the activities of politicians and others before voting on January 15, the Geneva-based Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, or OHCHR, said on Friday. Ugandan police, the military and others have used live ammunition to disperse peaceful assemblies, and the security forces have often used unmarked vans known locally as “drones” to abduct opposition party supporters, it added. The police didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on allegations in the U.N. report. "They are hounding us, they are beating us left, right, and center, they are teargassing us, they pepper spray us, they even shoot live bullets at us," Wine said as he campaigned on Friday. As his convoy moved through the streets, Ugandan security forces were seen firing teargas into the crowd to disperse his supporters. Wine told The Associated Press in a recent interview that he and his supporters had been victimized repeatedly by the military, which he accused of dominating preparations for the election. Wine is challenging President Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986 by repeatedly rewriting the rules to stay in power. Term and age limits have been scrapped, rivals jailed or sidelined, and state security forces are a constant presence at opposition rallies as Museveni seeks a seventh term. Museveni, 81, is the third-longest-serving leader in Africa.
