There is a small chance you have heard of the abandoned city of Ocean Falls, on the remote coastline of BC, Canada. There is an even smaller chance you have heard of Link Lake, but the two go hand in hand. If we were to rewind 120 years, this coastal valley, with glorious cascading mountains, would have been home to a chain of small lakes. Due to its proximity to the ocean, with a deep water port and perfectly pure water, it was the ideal location for a pulp mill. Fast forward a couple of decades, and Canadas largest Pulp Mill and company town were going full swing. Damming off the lake provided abundant water for the mill, as well as enough power to run a 5000 person city, and turned a number of small lakes into one massive beautiful lake. This quickly became the location for locals to build summer homes, cottages and cabins. The only catch though, was that the land was never owned or purchasable. Instead, the houses were all built on leased land, and as the years went on, the leases expired, and now are unfortunately non renewable. Located in the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest, the elements are not kind to an unmaintained house, and of the dozens of cabins built, only two still stand today. Cabins or not, Link Lake is an absolutely exceptional place to explore. I have been fortunate to visit 56 countries in my life, and most of them were via Cruise Ship, offering a multitude of coastal mountain and fjord viewing. In all of those travels, I have never seen something like this. As you travel along the 33 kilometres of the lake, you will be surrounded by massive vertically ascending mountains, consistently changing. It is easy to get lost in the amazement looking up, but beneath is nearly as spectacular. Much of this valley was covered in large old growth forest, and was never logged before flooding. Ancient trees, perfectly preserved under water stretch hundreds of feet off of the bottom, and in many places are visible from the surface. We had Link Lake on our list of possible adventures during this stay, but the locals were very clear in stating it was a necessity. They could not have been more correct. I hope this video and the views are enjoyed by all, but I wish more that you could see and experience it for yourself. There is an energy on that lake and in that valley, and it is something I wish I could share.
