Built in 2569 of the Third Age, Meduseld was the high hall and seat of the Kings of Rohan. Around it was built the town of Edoras, which became the largest settlement and capital of the Mark. The city was built on a hill in Harrowdale, a valley of the White Mountains which lay under the great mountain Starkhorn. The river Snowbourn flowed past Edoras on its way west towards the Entwash. Outside the northern gate lay the Barrowfield, with the tombs of the Rulers of Rohan arrayed in two lines along the road.
