I played this song with James Brown hundreds of times. Like most of his tunes, it was a thrill ride, every time. This one is a bit of a tribute to my two favorite guitarists. The ones who influenced me the most, and the ones that I had the greatest times with. Ronald "Rock" Laster and James "Keith" Jenkins. I hope they'll accept my invite to come on the channel and correct my shoddy simulations of their guitar parts. :) This version is a great example of how tight the band was and how spontaneous James Brown was. This is from the House of Blues at The Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas 1999. You can find the video on YouTube. Check it out, it's great! I was there! Most bands would do 12 of something or 16 of something. As you will see in this breakdown of the 1999 version, The Godfather of Soul preferred whatever he felt at the time. 13? 18? If it feels right, it was right, and the band could catch it in real time. This was the version of the band that I saw before I joined the band. The band on its own was absolutely mesmerizing. I saw my first soundcheck in April 27, 1998. I had the daunting task of being in the opening band the next night. Somehow I made it into the band and I've always treasured those memories and been in awe of JB and all the band members who I learned so much from. I love all you guys and gals! The dancers and singers and Danny Ray, RT, CB, everybody was beautiful. We had our ups and downs but it was a family. A big beautiful, funky family. I hope you enjoy this lesson. Playing this song again really brought back great memories. Part Two coming tomorrow.
