Hungrybox's Ness could never... and that's probably for the best. Can you imagine the raw damage and devastation that would be left in the wake of his pop-off if he won a set playing Ness like this? The mere thought sends shivers down my spine. ...But on a more serious note, there's a question I commonly get that I was hoping I'd be able to answer here: "Why Ness?" To me, that's the wrong question. But to know why--along with what the right one is, and my answer to it--you must understand that I have played Super Smash Bros. Melee for the Nintendo Gamecube, as Sheik, for a very long time. As someone who has played through the end of the Bronze era of the game all the way to about a year before the dawn of the Slippi age, I have seen many metagames have come and go in various forms and patterns... like seasons. And when Winter has passed, there will be a new one, just like there always is. And then another one, and another one... There's a certain predictability that comes with experience. I bring this up because when I was thinking about how I wanted to pick up the game again, I was in my 30s, well past my prime, and I knew I wouldn't be satisfied with simply min-maxing my ability as a player to the best that my circumstances would allow. I also hadn't been passionate about Sheik in a long time. So for me to be happy playing, it became clear that my relationship with Super Smash Bros. Melee needed to change; my own "seasons" wouldn't be the same anymore. So, I asked myself: "What I do I want this new journey to look like, if it wasn't to try and min-max my skills on Sheik?" To my surprise, the answer came clearly and quickly: "I want to have the most fun that I possibly can. And to see how the game can still surprise me." With this in mind, I made a list that formalized the things I find most personally rewarding in SSBM. And after making it, I went through the roster and evaluated them on its items. I have provided the list below: 1) Not Sheik, as I’ve done everything I’ve wanted to do with her. 2) Can play the diagonal air-to-ground zoning position used by characters with powerful, threatening Fairs/Bairs (Sheik, Ganon, Peach, etc.) and/or angled projectiles, since it’s my favourite position to play in the game. 3) I want someone technical… and if not technical, then unique. I tend to learn characters quickly, so fairly standard characters like Doc or Mr. Game & Watch will struggle to hold my interest. 4) Sick punish game, non-negotiable. Ideally, has a launcher Up Air and some flashy-as-hell finishers. 5) Ideally, someone who I can make my own playstyle with, without their player-base pushing me to so rigorously follow the meta. I want room to explore my own ideas on how I want and think the character can be played. Following the review of 25 characters, it was only Ness that had a perfect score. And, like you, I was initially skeptical. But then I reminded myself that the whole point of this was to be surprised. And if that was true, perhaps "Why Ness?" was the wrong question. Perhaps, given the criteria, a better one was "Why not Ness?" I am pleased to report I have yet to find a good answer to that :) Song Selections: Level Clear! - Tom Cardy Out of Body - ufo ufo
