Around 3 a.m. on Dec. 31, 2011, Cleveland Clinic surgeon Nicholas Smedira, MD, began heart transplant surgery for Garrettsville, Ohio, teen Porter Lyons, who had been flown by emergency helicopter on Christmas Eve when the symptoms of his inherited cardiomyopathy became too serious to ignore. Less that three hours later, at 5:59 a.m., Smedira and his team started Porter's new heart. Afterward, Porter would be blown away by the whole thing — amazed that this little cooler that looked like an ice cream bucket held the treatment for his cardiomyopathy. His new heart.
