Frank Stoltzfus, farm manager at Masonic Village Farm in Elizabethtown, PA, hosted a live virtual field trip with middle, high school and college students from across Pennsylvania. Questions asked by students during the trip included: How do you keep track of each animal? How long is a cow pregnant? Why do you group your cattle by age and size? Do you have an emergency disaster plan on the farm? Why can cattle eat some things that humans cannot? What processes/protocols do you use when cattle get sick? What does BQA mean? And what does it mean on your farm? How many finished cattle do you send to market on your farm? What do you do with cows that "age out" on your farm? How many breeds of cattle are on your farm? Is the breeding process easy for your cattle? What happens if a cow is ailing or failing, and cannot be placed back into production? How much beef comes from one cow? Do you have to modify or change what and how much you are feeding your cattle throughout the year? ***
