CREATIVE DISCLAIMER: Uploading a video entitled 'Rush For Solo Piano' is a juicy invitation for many Rush fans (particularly those that play guitar, bass or drums) to stick the boot in. I want to save myself the repetition of defending myself from such an attack by punching back in one place! Here goes... a) This is not definitive. It's my best effort, that's all, and also the realisation of a personal ambition. But let's be proud of it and give it a strong title anyway. 'Rush For Solo Piano' it is! b) Of course there will be musical content missing. There are valid reasons for omissions. First of all, as I did with my James Bond For Solo Piano, I most often omit repeated verses because without the lyrics it's most likely to be superfluous and could even get tedious. This inevitably leads to a much shorter piece of music of course but I'd rather have that than match the duration of the original song for the sake of it. c) I've not quite got the right chord, not quite got the time signature right or clearly haven't got the right notes, I can only apologise. It irritates me too when people upload something that's wrong. Suffice to say, I did my best, listening and finding out things on the piano as best I could. d) Compromises are made of course due to the disparity between piano and an entire rock band (let alone one as remarkable and spectacular as Rush). Inevitably, whether it be Rush, Tubular Bells or James Bond (three 'Solo Piano' projects I've undertaken in the last ten years), concessions have to be made because of impracticality or even, impossibility. Chords, melodies, rhythms can all be transferred to the keyboard but not all the SOUNDS can be and sometimes that sound might be the best bit, unfortunately. Alex Lifeson's solos for instance. A lot of the idiomatic elements of the guitar....bends, slides, vibrato, etc....have no place in a piano part. Often the texture is simply too dense to manage ie. to play a melodic bassline at the same time as a rhythmic chordal progression in the mid-register AND include the vocal melody...it's not ALWAYS impossible with only two hands, but most of the time it is. Yes, overdubbing would solve it but that would defeat the point of the project and, in my opinion, make it less interesting and less rewarding for me. The purpose of this was to face the challenge of conveying much loved music while exploring new possibilities as well as toying with the impossibilities. The most pointless exercise, for me, would be to merely replicate, as much as possible (even if it WERE possible), note for note. This isn't a tribute act. It's a different form of respect for the original music and the band members who composed it. Interpretation not just imitation. In summary, I hope to have at least captured some of the ESSENCE of Rush's music, the SPIRIT of the original records...compromised as I was by limitations...and of course, I hope to have made it while making as few mistakes as possible. I hope also that all of the above can answer at least most of the criticism that is likely to come my way.
