IS IT OK TO LET YOUR DOG SNIFF AND HAVE SOME FREEDOM ON THE WALK ? The answer is YES it is ok but it's important to let the dog earn what they want to do. It is more rewarding that way. Many of my clients struggle to walk their dog properly, for whatever which reason, it could be pulling, it could be them reacting to stimuli etc so we very quickly fix this problem for them. One thing about dogs is they are very simple, if you let them choose when to stop and sniff and you let them dictate the walk, they will of course learn they can stop whenever they feel like it. This will make teaching them to ignore other things more difficult as in the dogs mind they are generally dictating things. Now this does not make the dog dominant nor does it mean the dog thinks it's the pack leader, it's simply been allowed to dictate things by the handler. A walk is meant to be enjoyable for the a dog and dogs like to stop and sniff and have some freedom so we take that and use it to our advantage. We ask for a little bit of structure (no pulling, no reacting, calm and relaxed etc) and then as a reward we allow the dog freedom. We then go back to structure. It's important to wait for eye contact before releasing the dog to have some freedom. Doing this means the dog still gets to do what they want but they had to earn it and pay attention to us in order to get that and that makes you important in your dogs eyes. BONUS TIP: Ask for eye contact before releasing your dog from anywhere, be it in a SIT, DOWN, PLACE etc, ask for eye contact before you leave the house for a walk, before you feed the dog, before giving them a treat etc. The more you reward eye contact and it leads to your dog getting what they want, the more important you become to your dog, the more Focus you get and the more your dog listens.
