JESUS revealed this to the JEWS during Hanukkah- The Secret Teaching of Jesus. This encounter is recorded in John 10:22-39. The Maccabean Revolt (167–160 BC) was a Jewish uprising against the Seleucid Empire, led by the priestly family of the Hasmoneans. In the second century before Christ, a great storm of oppression swept over Judea. The land, once sacred to the covenant of Abraham, had fallen under the rule of the Seleucid Empire, a kingdom determined to erase the Jewish way of life. At the heart of this tyranny stood Antiochus IV Epiphanes, a ruthless king who sought to force Greek culture upon the Jewish people. He desecrated the Second Temple in Jerusalem, erecting an idol of Zeus within its sacred walls. Pigs were sacrificed upon the holy altar, and the study of the Torah was outlawed. Circumcision—an ancient sign of God’s covenant—was forbidden, and those who defied the king’s decree faced death. The faith of Israel was on the verge of extinction. But from the quiet town of Modiin, a voice of defiance arose. Mattathias, a priest of the Hasmonean family, refused to bow to the tyrant’s demands. When a fellow Jew stepped forward to offer a pagan sacrifice, Mattathias, filled with righteous fury, struck him down and destroyed the idol. His cry rang through the hills: "Whoever is zealous for the law and upholds the covenant, follow me!" With his five sons, Mattathias fled to the wilderness, where they gathered warriors willing to fight for their faith. Though Mattathias did not live to see the battle through, his son Judas Maccabeus, a warrior of unshakable faith, took up the mantle. Judas and his followers, known as the Maccabees, waged a guerrilla war against the mighty Seleucid army. Though vastly outnumbered, they fought with the strength of those who know they battle for a cause greater than themselves. Victory after victory emboldened them, and soon, they marched upon Jerusalem. At last, in 164 BC, the Maccabees reclaimed the Temple. With tears of joy and shouts of triumph, they cleansed the sacred space and rededicated the altar to the One True God. The golden Menorah, long extinguished, was relit, though only one day’s worth of oil remained. But by the Lord’s hand, the flame burned for eight days, a miracle that would be remembered as the festival of Hanukkah—the Feast of Dedication. The Maccabean Revolt was not merely a fight for land but a stand for faith, a testimony that the light of God's people would never be snuffed out. It was a battle not just of swords, but of spirit, proving that no empire, no earthly king, could silence the covenant of the Almighty.
